Hi Reader, Two weeks ago I told you something around here is shifting a bit. Not one big overhaul, just a quiet bit of change in about a hundred small(many very, very tiny) decisions finally adding up to something that felt aligned. A bunch of you wrote back (thank you!), and many of you landed on the same spot: the alignment part. Specifically, where things feel in line for you, and where they really don’t. So l’m staying right there, because there’s a piece of this I didn’t say last time, and it’s important because it’s the piece that actually makes the whole thing work. Long-time readers already know one of my favorite drumbeats: that small actions compound into massive change. What I say a lot less often is that they compound in both directions. We all love this compounding when it’s pointed at the good stuff: The daily walk that leads to overall wellbeing, the hard conversation you finally start that leads to a much improved relationship, that ONE boundary you hold so you finally have less resentment in your life. Ten small yeses, and things slowly but very very surely look different. I know this works; it's the principle that basically underlies all of what I do in helping clients go after what they want. BUT (eek) the small stuff isn’t only stacking when we’re being intentional about it. It’s stacking all the time, whether we’re steering or not. The email you keep not sending, the thing you meant to say and swallowed instead, the check-in with the report you keep pushing to next week, etc. The little “it’s fine, don’t make it weird” you tell yourself on a Tuesday, when *it* is anything but fine. None of those small actions feel like any big deal in the moment, but that’s the trap and why precisely we allow them to persist. They’re designed to feel like nothing. But these small actions, I’m sorry to say, they compound too. The unsent email becomes a stalled project; the swallowed sentence becomes a relational distance you can’t quite explain six months later; the punted check-ins result in a fractured and dissatisfied team. Nobody chooses the big & painful outcome, it’s just what accrues, one tiny non-action at a time. Same math, stacking up in the opposite direction. And that’s what misalignment actually is, in a nutshell. Not some big dramatic wrongness, but a slow accumulation of small things quietly drifting out of line, bit by bit. Which--oddly I know--is the most hopeful thing to me, because it means there’s no neutral. You’re never really standing still. Something is always compounding, so the only real question is: Which way? Is it towards what YOU want to build or not? Last time I said the first small action is just to name the thing — to simply notice where you or the people you lead feel a little out of alignment. That’s still step one, and it’s the one everything else hangs on. This is step two. Once you’ve named it, you don’t overhaul anything. You just move one small thing out of the drifting-against-you column and into the other one. Send the two-line email, find a way to say the actual sentence, take that short walk. Not because today’s version matters much on its own (it doesn’t necessarily) but because you’re quietly casting a vote for the direction you’d rather be heading. That right there, that tiny, almost invisible redirect you make before you can see where it lands, is basically the whole thing I’ve spent a career on. That today is another day, that you can start again, and that even the teensy tiny changes matter. It’s the ground everything I’m building around here stands on. And there’s more of that coming over the next couple of weeks; I’m getting closer to being able to show you : ) ------ One small thing before you go. Take the thing you named after the last letter — or pick a new one! — maybe something else has surfaced since. Find the smallest possible move in the other direction, and make only that single step or shift. Then watch which way it starts to tip. Hit reply and tell me what you learn. I read every email and love hearing from you! Warmly, Connect with me: |
Dear Reader, Before we get back to the usual around here (the tools, the ideas, and the insights I usually bring you), I owe you the rest of what I teased on my birthday a few weeks ago: a new name for the podcast, a trailer for your ears, and a first guest I couldn't wait for you to meet. All 3 are HERE.🎉 🧡 The name is This Changes Things (the next chapter of Your New Life Blend), and the trailer is LIVE right now. It’s 2 minutes, and I'd love for you to hear it: --> ▶️🎧LISTEN TO THE TRAILER...
Hi Reader, For the past month, I’ve been telling you I was getting closer to being ready to show you what I’ve been building around here. Phew, I can finally stop being vague about it. Today is my birthday, and as a gift (to me and you) I’m sharing (mostly 😉) what I’ve been building around here. I’m calling it a birthday surprise in reverse 🎉. The backstory: My work has been quietly and organically evolving for years. I didn’t actually have any designs to sit down one day and redesign it, but...
Dear Reader, Last month, I wrote about misalignment and how it's rarely dramatic, rarely obvious. It's just that quiet, subtle friction. Teams working hard but are rowing in slightly different directions. Stated priorities that don't quite match where time and money actually go. A lot of you wrote back. And what I heard most wasn't panic, it was recognition:"That's exactly what's happening here," or "I've been sensing exactly this but couldn't name it." So now we're a month out. Q1 is nearly...
